Forest City and Newmarket

Newmarket is not inside Forest City. The town, the Heath, the gallops and the surrounding stud land all sit outside the proposed area, and nothing in the plan builds on any of it. Newmarket does gain from the plan: the Cambridge–Newmarket line is double-tracked and Felixstowe freight is moved off the A14.

The double-tracking of the Cambridge–Newmarket line removes the single-track bottleneck that has constrained the town’s rail service for decades, and moving Felixstowe freight off the A14 eases the road too.

Racing has been in Newmarket for 350 years. It will still be there in 350 more. We'd quite like a day at the July Course to be a tram-and-train journey for a million new racegoers.
